Skybox Develops 30MW Data Center in Chicago

Dallas-headquartered data center developer and operator Skybox Datacenters, has announced the development of a new data center site located in Elk Grove Village, Chicago.

Developed in a joint venture with Prologis Inc​., Skybox Chicago I​ is designed to provide up to 30MW of load capacity across an area of 189,000 square feet. Located about 22 miles from downtown Chicago and 9 miles from O’Hare International Airport, the company expects the new data center to offer interconnect and expansion capabilities to the region’s colocation and hyperscale data center market.

The new joint venture between Skybox and Prologis is focused on developing assets in primary data center markets, delivering capacity for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise customers in the region. Already, the joint venture claims to have access to numerous assets in Elk Grove Village and plans to provide data center users with scale and a roadmap for future growth and opportunity.

“Our partnership will bring together two very important roles: Skybox will provide leading data center development and leasing expertise while Prologis will bring substantial holdings in the local Chicago market and throughout the United States. We are excited to see this partnership elevate data center sector standards with best in class real estate and data center collaboration in a booming market like Elk Grove,” said Rob Morris, CEO of Skybox Datacenters.

In addition to market proximity, Skybox Chicago I also boasts of access to 100% renewable power and expects to access low energy costs in Chicago. The new facility will also allow users leverage the Illinois Sales Tax Incentives approved and implemented in October 2019, having tax exemptions on both data center construction and purchased IT equipment.

This announcement is coming just after Skybox sold its Houston One facility to colocation data center provider Element Critical. Located precisely at 22000 Franz Rd, Katy, Texas; this facility has the potential to offer 26MW load capacity.
