How did you get into data center security?
After graduating high school in Houston, my first job was working in a gas station during the night shift. I learned a lot about security measures during that time. Some local police officers and security personnel that I knew suggested I consider a security position at Prairie View College. I worked for the college in their security group and simultaneously earned my bachelor’s degree. I was then recommended for the head site security position at Skybox in June 2016 and have been here ever since. I have grown a lot and the team at Skybox has helped me learn a lot. I’ve increased my understanding of how all the physical components of the data center work and their roles in our performance which, in turn, helps me better understand where and how we best secure and protect our overall operation.
What is one thing we don’t know about you?
I spend a lot of time mentoring young men in our church youth group at Lion’s Unity Missionary Baptist Church. Some of them don’t have their dad or mom around so we try to educate them on everything from Bible stories to life skills. Some weeks we talk about integrity or manners, others we change flat tires or practice table etiquette. Our hope is that these workshops would instill values like leadership, responsibility, and faith in God. My wife Jessica and I see it as our mission to help these young boys grow up to be influential men of character in their community.
What makes working for Skybox different?
Definitely the environment. I went from working with people just passing through to actually developing relationships with my team and our customers. I enjoy not only my role in security, but also what I consider as my role in customer service. I want to help make sure our clients know that we want to serve them in any way possible. I enjoy the increase in responsibility working directly with customers and learning new technologies to ensure the safety of our site. I also actually have fun at my job and really enjoy the people I get to work with every day. Everyone has a good attitude and works well together as a team. I like taking on new challenges that I typically wouldn’t come across in other work environments. Why be anywhere else?
How has your job changed during the pandemic?
Since the pandemic began, our security measures have adapted and increased significantly. We have and continue to engage special protocols in the interest of the safety of our staff and customers who enter and work in the building. Procedures like temperature checks, mandated hand washing, disinfecting areas, and providing masks are a few of these new additions to my responsibilities. I got the opportunity to help our technical team create a new interactive virtual training program for our security guards to make sure they are prepared and up to date on our most recent security protocol.
What is your favorite way to spend your time off?
More than anything, I enjoy spending time with my family. My wife Jessica is very supportive and partners with me in just about everything. We’ve been married for seven years. She loves to cook and I love to eat, so we make a great team. We like to vacation with our extended family often and volunteer together at the church regularly. I love going to the lake by my house and dropping a line in. I caught my first fish just a year and a half ago and I’ve been “hooked” ever since!
